• Legitimacy Theory – Legitimacy is a generalized perception that the actions of the organization are proper or appropriate within a given social system (Lehtonen, 2003)

• Stackholder Theory- Stakeholder theory suggests that organizations are not only responsible to shareholders, but also that they are responsible to all individuals, group, etc. that have a stake in a particular organization (Jennings, 2003)

 2-Select a particular planning, execution and control problem / opportunity within the project and characterise it.  Be specific and focus on a single problem /opportunity. Contrast your observations and the information you collected with the methods and tools discussed in the module material. It is best to identify a problem with which the organisation is having trouble (e.g. running over the initial budget or initial schedule) or an opportunity for improvement (e.g. compressing the project delivery time or preparing a cost monitoring system). If you find a specific problem / opportunity, you will have a target for your analysis. Avoid the temptation to analyse the entire organisation.

3-Develop recommendations and specific ways to help the project organisation to improve the planning and resource management capabilities.  Your target audience for the recommendations should be the people responsible for the problem / opportunity in the  organisation you are studying.  Make specific, actionable recommendations.  Present critically the value of your recommendations, assuming they are adopted.

The format of the final report may include specific deliverables (e.g. a CPM chart, cost estimating technique, or earned value analysis technique) in the body of the report.  You should select the format that best meets the needs of your client organisation. Study Designs and Correlational Research

Three basic types of research designs used in quantitative research: (a) non-experimental research design, (b) quasi-experimental research design, and (c) true-experimental research design. As noted by Bill Trochim in our assigned readings for this module, the true experimental research design entails the random assignment of study participants to one of two or more groups – the control group or the experimental group(s). This distinguishing feature makes the experimental design most suitable for research studies involving a causal type of research design.
In lieu of random assignment of study participants, the researcher may use pre-existing groups for comparison. This type of study design is referred to as a quasi-experimental design. This design lacks a control group for comparison – making it less suitable than the experimental design for causal types of studies. International Issues Paper –Spring 2012

The purpose of this project is to further develop your critical thinking, research skills and to encourage you to delve into an international issue of your choosing. The project consists of two components: a collection of at least four current newspaper articles related to a singel internationl event of your choosing, and 2000 word summary-analysis paper devoted to the articles you selected for this project.

Purpose of the Paper (Examining the Production of Contemporary Historiography) – The goal of this paper is to allow you to analyze how “historiography” is an ongoing process largely influenced by the news media. History is a subjectively generated product. History incorporates the biases and viewpoints of those who produce it. The news media today is a key source in providing us with “meaning” connected to newsworthy “historical” events. In fact, the news media is in fact a major part of the process that generates “history.” Although news media reporters and editors generally claims that they are presenting “only the facts,” the way in which these “facts” are presented often carry a number of biases that strongly influence public perception and interpretations of current events.

For this assignment, you are going to pick a specific, single international event and examine how this event is presented by different news media sources from around the globe. You are being asked to compare the articles you have selected for this assignment and discuss how the differing ways in which the event you have chosen actually reflects more than the “plain” facts, but rather reveals complex layers of social values, assumptions, biases, beliefs and meanings within by each of your articles’ authors.

Selecting a Topic

1) First, select a single international news event that has occurred in the past 60 days. Since the purpose of the paper is to address international issues, the event you select for this assignment must have occurred OUTSIDE of the United States (although the issue may INCLUDE the US as one of the agents involved). There are numerous current news issues to choose from, but for this project I strongly suggest that you choose an event of a political or social nature.
If you are struggling to find a topic for this paper, you may want to check out respected news sources online such a CNN, BBC, Al-Jazeera, etc. to get a sense of current news events that are relevant to this assignment.

2) Your topic should be a single, recent event, not an ongoing issue. For example, you might
choose to discuss a recent single, violent action that took place in Iraq ot Afghanistan, but you may NOT choose the overall war in Iraq or Afghanistan as your topic. Or you might choose a single recent protest that has occurred in Syria as your event for this paper, but you may not choose the overall uprising in Syria as your topic. A recent election, a newly approved law or act of legislation (outside of the US) an international meeting, the signing of a treaty or international agreement, a single act of violence, a recent missile test, a recent day of protest or a recent military action that took place on a single day. However, any paper that tries to address the entirety of the Iraq or Afghan War, the Arab Spring, Peace in the Middle East, Aids in Africa, poverty in India, International gay rights, international human rights, human trafficking in Southeast Asia or drug trafficking in Mexico are all too broad for this assignment and are not appropriate topics. You need to choose something much smaller – a single action or event – as a topic for this assignment. For example, you could pick some relatively small, particular portion of an issue to focus on, such as a reaction to a controversial law that has just been passed, or a particular act of violence that recently occurred, or a recent meeting between heads of state or a recent foreign election, or a recent military intervention, etc, Also, please do not choose a sporting event, a natural disaster, health crisis or outbreak of disease for this assignment.

Selecting Articles
3) You will need to have collected at least four newspaper articles on the SAME EVENT from DIFFERENT nations. You are only permitted to use one article from a US newspaper source and your other three article choices should be on the same event but each one must be selected from a DIFFERENT newspaper and from a DIFFERENT nation. In other words, each article you choose will come from a different nation’s newspaper, but all four articles must still be focused on the same event and should have been published within 48 hours of each other. This will enable you to distinguish how a particular event is presented differently in various newspapers from around the world. You may use online versions of newspaper articles. The articles should not be more than 60 days old when you submit your final paper. You will need to submit hard copies of each of your newspaper articles when you submit your completed assignment.

Conclusion: Write a 2000 word Project Summary-Critique

4) WRITE a 2000 minimum word (double spaced, medium size 10 –12 font, standard margins) in which you provide a summary and comparison of the different articles you have selected for this assignment. You will search for differing emphases and patterns between your articles, and you will consider the differing impact each individual article might make on its reader depending on how the issue is presented and handled by each author. You are to examine and critique the differing ways in which the issue is being presented in your articles.

Also, for this paper, you need to consider how the news reports of today become the “historiography” of tomorrow. This is an opportunity for you to think critically about how the news is presented to the reader in each newspaper. Do you have a sense that certain “facts” are being emphasized in one article while those same facts are dismissed or ignored or presented somewhat differently by the authors in some of your other selected articles.? Do you have a sense that only one particular side of the issue is being presented in a particular article? If so, why do you think this is happening? In what ways has the event you have selected for this assignment been reported differently in each of your articles? (Keep in mind that these differences may be subtle). in what way might these differences influence the reader to draw a different conclusion about the event? A particular new article will often (though not always) tend to focus on only side of an issue. Which sides of the issue do you see being presented in your different articles? Why do you think this might this be happening? In what way might ethnocentric perspectives or national interests be influencing how the issue is being presented differently in each of your articles? Do you see any biases built into the way that the issue is being presented or reported by the authors of your articles?

Models of Nursing Care
In this unit, we will be examining Florence Nightingale, Jean Watson\’s Caring Model, Patricia Benner\’s from Novice to Expert, and Katie Eriksson. We will also look at a few of the Grand Nursing Theorists, such as Dorothea Orem, Imogene King, and Dorothy Johnson. In examining these nursing models, we will attempt to discern the most important features and levels of abstraction, as well as determine the appropriateness of the application of a model or a theory to a particular setting.

Dorothy Johnson
Although Dorothy Johnson did not have a graduate degree in nursing [her master’s degree was in public health], she was the top student in her nursing class when she graduated from Vanderbilt School of Nursing in 1942. Johnson was faculty at Vanderbilt, but had the distinction of developing, with Lulu Hassenplug, the first four-year generic basic nursing course in the United States. She joined the staff of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1949. One of her more renowned writings, One Conceptual Model of Nursing (1968), is considered a classic in nursing literature. Two particularly striking comments include her statement that “…we [nurses] may contribute to the achievement of medicine’s goals by fulfilling our own mission” (Johnson, 1968, p. 9) in relation to working with physicians, and her remarks on the need for a unified approach to nursing education: “the variations in our conceptions have led us to considerable variation in word and deed…and often to conflict and disorganization. Only explication of our thoughts and open discussion are likely to lead us to greater unity and to greater service to society” (p. 9).

Imogene King
Dr. King received her initial nursing education in a diploma nursing program and then obtained a baccalaureate degree in nursing, a master’s degree in nursing, and a doctorate in education from Teachers College at Columbia University in New York. She is currently professor emeritus at the University of South Florida and still very active in her nursing career, serving as a member of the Code of Nursing Ethics taskforce in the American Nursing Association. She is considered one of the original nursing theorists and has achieved international recognition for her Theory of Goal Attainment (King, 1971; 1981). Dr. King writes that, as a child, she “learned that goal-setting helped us make positive decisions in our journey through life. We were taught at home to look at the consequences of our decisions before finalizing plans” (King, 2001, p. 276). She believed these early childhood values helped her to frame her Theory of Goal Attainment. She has considerable popularity internationally as a nursing consultant, working with nurses in China, Germany, Japan, Canada, Africa, Sweden, and Denmark in helping establish good practice patterns and applying solid nursing theories and models within their workplaces.

Dorothea Orem
Dorothea Orem is one of nursing’s eminent theorists, having developed a widely recognized model of nursing care. In nursing, there are both theories of care and models of care, each developed to assist in some aspect of nursing care delivery. Orem’s model is called the Self-Care Framework. In it, she postulates that people meet their own needs through their own deliberate actions, unless they become ill. If that happens, nurses need to respond to those needs and assist people in meeting their own care or self care – hence the name Self-Care Framework (Orem, 1991). Orem obtained her baccalaureate degree in nursing in 1939 and an MSN in 1946, both from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Defining Critical Attributes, Antecedents, and Consequences as the Next Step in the Concept Analysis Process

In this unit, we will be examining Florence Nightingale, Jean Watson\’s Caring Model, Patricia Benner\’s from Novice to Expert, and Katie Eriksson. We will also look at a few of the Grand Nursing Theorists, such as Dorothea Orem, Imogene King, and Dorothy Johnson. In examining these nursing models, we will attempt to discern the most important features and levels of abstraction, as well as determine the appropriateness of the application of a model or a theory to a particular setting.

Dorothy Johnson
Although Dorothy Johnson did not have a graduate degree in nursing [her master’s degree was in public health], she was the top student in her nursing class when she graduated from Vanderbilt School of Nursing in 1942. Johnson was faculty at Vanderbilt, but had the distinction of developing, with Lulu Hassenplug, the first four-year generic basic nursing course in the United States. She joined the staff of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1949. One of her more renowned writings, One Conceptual Model of Nursing (1968), is considered a classic in nursing literature. Two particularly striking comments include her statement that “…we [nurses] may contribute to the achievement of medicine’s goals by fulfilling our own mission” (Johnson, 1968, p. 9) in relation to working with physicians, and her remarks on the need for a unified approach to nursing education: “the variations in our conceptions have led us to considerable variation in word and deed…and often to conflict and disorganization. Only explication of our thoughts and open discussion are likely to lead us to greater unity and to greater service to society” (p. 9).

Imogene King
Dr. King received her initial nursing education in a diploma nursing program and then obtained a baccalaureate degree in nursing, a master’s degree in nursing, and a doctorate in education from Teachers College at Columbia University in New York. She is currently professor emeritus at the University of South Florida and still very active in her nursing career, serving as a member of the Code of Nursing Ethics taskforce in the American Nursing Association. She is considered one of the original nursing theorists and has achieved international recognition for her Theory of Goal Attainment (King, 1971; 1981). Dr. King writes that, as a child, she “learned that goal-setting helped us make positive decisions in our journey through life. We were taught at home to look at the consequences of our decisions before finalizing plans” (King, 2001, p. 276). She believed these early childhood values helped her to frame her Theory of Goal Attainment. She has considerable popularity internationally as a nursing consultant, working with nurses in China, Germany, Japan, Canada, Africa, Sweden, and Denmark in helping establish good practice patterns and applying solid nursing theories and models within their workplaces.

Dorothea Orem
Dorothea Orem is one of nursing’s eminent theorists, having developed a widely recognized model of nursing care. In nursing, there are both theories of care and models of care, each developed to assist in some aspect of nursing care delivery. Orem’s model is called the Self-Care Framework. In it, she postulates that people meet their own needs through their own deliberate actions, unless they become ill. If that happens, nurses need to respond to those needs and assist people in meeting their own care or self care – hence the name Self-Care Framework (Orem, 1991). For the Formalist Critical approaches, this can be a bit difficult, especially if you are posing an interpretation that hasn’t been widely discussed. In this case, you may use bits and pieces of other scholarly work in order to support or contextualize your own critical analysis of the work.

Of course, for the other critical approaches (Marxist, Postcolonial Critics, etc.) you will definitely need to familiarize yourself with other scholarly interpretations within the realm of your specific critical approach in order to produce an original interpretation.

RESEARCH DETAILS:

1) Give proper credit: In any paragraph where you use a quotation or paraphrase, you must identify the work and the author whose words or ideas you are borrowing.  Use this formula:  In “Title,” author verb, “Quotation” (#).  For example:  In Poor Creatures, Eluned Summers-Bremner argues, “Or, as the narrative does not say, like they were made by someone who was not completely human, and whose understanding of his soul was similarly compromised: detailed, thoughtful, but mechanistic” (9). A full identification is necessary the first time you refer to a work.  After that, you can simply refer to the author.  For example:  Summers-Bremner further suggests, “Where humans anthropomorphize animals, Tommy too creates them in his image” (9).  Please note that there is no “p.” before the page number.  Note also that the period ending the sentence occurs after the page reference.  Note that book titles are italicized (no more underlining).  If citing a book, place the article title in italics:  In Title, author verb, “Quotation” (#).

2) How to quote from Never Let Me Go:  You need not use the formula for quoting a scholar; simply lead your reader to the quotation with a phrase that provides some context or part of your argument.  For example: Ishiguro intentionally emphasizes Madame’s conflicting feelings about the clones and their ability to demonstrate a soul in their art when Kathy reports, “Madame was afraid of us. But she was afraid of us in the same way someone might be afraid of spiders” (32).

Notice the present-tense use of “reports”—Literature is always referred to in the present tense.

If the quotation is over four typed lines, make it a block quotation.  For example:  Kathy’s character consistently compares the present to the past, constantly and desperately wanting to find meaning and purpose in the differences:

Quite a few students wanted to be drivers of one sort or other, and often, when the conversation went this way, some veterans would begin comparing particular scenic routes they’d travelled, favorite roadside cafés, difficult roundabouts, that sort of thing. Today, of course, I’d be able to talk a lot of them under the table on those topics. Back then, though, I used to just listen, not saying a thing, drinking in their talk. (143)

A block quotation doesn’t need quotation marks because the typography tells you it is a quotation.  Note that the period is placed as normally done at the end of the sentence.  The page reference is tabbed over to the right hand margin.

3) Don’t let the research rule your paper:  I have three simple rules for students:  1) don’t begin a paragraph with a quotation or paraphrase, 2) don’t end a paragraph with a quotation or paraphrase, and 3) don’t place quotations back to back.  Why have these rules?  They force you to write topic sentences for your paragraphs.  They also force you to write sentences that tell the reader why the quotation is pertinent to your argument.  The rules also force you to write sentences that connect your ideas from paragraph to paragraph.  The metaphor I use is that of a “sandwich.”  The quotation is sandwiched in between sentences of your own just the way the peanut butter & jelly are spread between slices of bread.  So use my sandwich metaphor in constructing your paragraphs.  It works.
4) Follow manuscript conventions:  No title pages please.  Just type your name, date and course info in the top left-hand corner of page one.  Double space and center your title over your first paragraph.  All pages should have 1-inch margins on all four sides and succeeding pages should have a header in the top right hand corner with your last name and the page number, as you can see on your course syllabus.  The font should be standard (usually Times New Roman, not italic.) And it should be 12-point in size.  The lines should be double spaced.  Do not skip an extra line between paragraphs (this is a convention for single spacing).  A paper clip is best for holding the paper together; a staple is also fine.  Do not waste money on plastic or manila folders.

5) The Works Cited page:  This should be the last page of the paper.  It should contain an alphabetical list of all the works referred to in the paper.  For this paper, the Works Cited page should have a minimum of three entries: two secondary sources (critical journal articles) and your primary source for Never Let Me Go. Again, an MLA Handbook or the OWL at Perdue will help you determine the correct formats for your entries.  Remember that indentation is the reverse of that for paragraphs (so that the alphabetized words fall on the left hand margin).

In recent years the environment has faced substantial changes as a result of degradation resulting from activities of various stakeholders such as consumers and industries in various economic sectors. Some countries such as Norway, Sweden and Denmark have employed fiscal measures that could curb the effects of electricity on the environment. All energy sectors have reportedly strived to minimize the effects of environmental issues especially those accompanying energy production (Bharvirkar et al.2003). For instance, the French nuclear energy has endeavoured in ensuring that the health of its citizens have been protected by implementing policies in ensuring that  there is no harmful effects from electricity production.

Bodies such as the Canadian Atomic Energy commission (CAE) have implemented standard operating procedure of ensuring that the assessment of the environmental impacts of electricity production and strategies for their mitigation are implemented and enforced. The last decade has seen substantial progress among various political impetuses in the United States, Europe and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries that have strived to quantify and identify the environmental and social impacts that are associated with the production and consumption of energy (Rose, 2004). Additionally, there exist various impacts of the emission from electricity generation that extend to the impairment of natural conditions in the environment. Various nations have embraced environmental policies that control the emission of gases more so, those gases generated from electricity production.

As noted by Bird & Blair (2004), the impacts of electricity generation related to environmental issues have generated considerable arguments that have taken various dimensions; some people argue that it has resulted in increased degradation of the environment while others argue that it has contributed to stability of environmental conditions. Very impressive efforts have been made by various stakeholders to minimize the negative impacts on environment as a result of electricity production e.g. the effort made by  electricity generating companies to reduce environmental degradation has been facilitated by the development of nuclear energy. There have been numerous comparisons in the performance of various cycles of fuel by different electricity generating companies with the aim of evaluating their impacts on environmental conditions and how they may be able to contribute to the sustenance of the environment.

Research questions

Methodology

This study will utilise quantitative and qualitative analysis to gather the data. This study will also employ the life cycle assessment (LCA) which is a prescribed method that is applied in the ISO 14040-43. This will help in getting the information regarding the utilisation of energy with negative impacts on the environment and their related impacts. The functional units that will be used are the 1 kWh of electricity (Bharvirkar et al., 2003). Various environmental impacts that will be analyzed include global warming impacts, conventional electricity, fossils and solar power. Based on these comparisons, various deployment technologies would also be estimated.  Energy, which is utilised in the construction operation and reconstruction of the power plant, will be estimated. The results would assist in the calculation of the stages of the life cycle of electricity production where environmental impacts are most severe.  This study will also utilise the impact pathway methodology which assesses the external cost related to the electricity production.

Conclusion

The findings from this study will lead to recommendations on effective and environmental benign methods of producing electricity. This will give a positive impetus to various government stakeholders which will aid in embracing the environmental policies that have been stipulated.

This is a guide to writing research proposals. The same principles apply to thesis proposals. Use these guidelines as a point of departure for discussions with your senior thesis advisor. These guidelines may serve to build your understanding of both proposal writing and future project.

Proposal Writing: What is it?

Proposal writing is important to your pursuit of an undergraduate degree. The proposal is type of intellectual scholastic (not legal) contract between you and your senior thesis committee. The proposal specifies what you will do, how you will do it, and how you will interpret the results.  Being clear about these things from the beginning will help you complete your thesis in a timely fashion.  Specifying what will be done also allows your committee to fairly determine whether you accomplished what you said you would do.  Of course you probably will discover things in the course of writing your proposal and/or thesis that were not anticipated, at which time you should discuss these issues with your advisor in a timely manner.  Overall, your proposal forms the backbone for the thesis itself and should aid you in successfully writing your thesis.

Proposals help you estimate the size of a project.  Your proposal will be shorter than your thesis.  Although proposals can range between a few pages to around twenty pages, this course requires a 10-page proposal.

A good thesis proposal starts with a good idea.  Getting a good idea comes from familiarity with a topic, which requires preparatory period of reading, observation, discussion, and reflection.  As you read about your topic, figure out what are the important and missing parts of what “we” (intellectuals) understand about the topic. Then figure out how to build and discover those important and missing pieces.  Live and breathe the topic! Talk about it with anyone who is interested (friends, teachers, family). Then just write the important parts as the proposal. Filling in the things that we do not know by describing how we can know more.  That is what research is all about.

RESEARCH PRPSPECTUS ON Attention-Deficit-Disorder /ADD

My areas of interest is attention-deficit-disorder or ADD in-which is an huge barrier in learning among children, ways of improving attention is a popular area of interest in research. I have always been fascinated by the topic of attention as it is an important component in learning and cognition. Attention is a cognitive process that allows people to focus on a particular subject, event or idea to contemplate, learn or observe it far more closely while ignoring and setting aside other elements of the environment. Often in a classroom setting, teachers ask their students to pay attention to the lesson so that they can learn better and far more effectively. In education, attention is seen as an important element of learning and as such it is a very important and relevant topic for the purpose of exploring developmental and learning psychology. Can attention really be controlled; can it be sharpened, developed and made much more effective? Since the establishment of attention-deficit-disorder or ADD as a huge barrier in learning among children, ways of improving attention is a popular area of interest in research. Quantitative Study Quantitative research is a method of research that aims to measure or quantify the phenomenon under study. The data utilized in this particular area of research is numeric. This kind of study is all about asking narrow questions to arrive at specific measurements of elements associated to or that which makes up the subject of study. It is possible to study the topic of attention from a quantitative approach. The key is to measure specifics of attention. One can utilize previously published public statistical data for example. Another is to utilize theories to explore the topic further. Of interest to me is self-efficacy theory which is associated with Bandura\’s social cognitive theory. According to him, the self-system which is the \’person as a whole\’ is made up of cognitive skills, abilities and attitudes. Together they influence behavior and personality. Self-efficacy is an offshoot of this theory as it is notion that dependent upon one\’s self efficacy, it is possible for a person to will one\’s self towards a course of action or a completion of a task. Self-efficacy therefore refers to capability. This is why this theory is compatible with the topic of attention as it takes capability and the ability to will the self to pay attention. When teachers ask students to \’pay attention\’, kids who do not have the capability to listen and obey disregard their teachers and do as they please which is a barrier in learning. This is most apparent for example in kids with ADD. This is of course a very broad area of interest and there are many paths that one can take when using quantitative methods to study this phenomenon. For myself, I propose a narrow study utilizing an experimental approach. I will study 2 groups of kindergarten students – one diagnosed with ADD and the other group coming from the \’normal\’ sample (without ADD). I will operationally the concept of attention by subjecting the kids to 2 activities, one that requires listening which is then followed by 2 simple questions based on what they hear, the other requiring listening, observation and copying of what they see. The results will then be numerically categorized to show the gap in terms of outcome of attention-performance from both groups. Results will then be compared and contrasted to show such attributes as mean, mode, range and the differences between the groups. In so doing, I will be able to show that there is a certain lack of self-efficacy in kids with ADD when it comes to \’giving attention\’ which in turn leads to their inability to \’listen, observe learn\’. I think this will be a good basis in which to study ways of improving attention. Qualitative Study Qualitative study is all about finding out as much details as possible on a particular phenomenon. Often this is done through case studies, ethnographies and critical social research which are all about exploring a social issue so as to arrive at possible solutions. As such, if ADD is a problem impending the learning of children, it is therefore critical to find ways of improving attention to alleviate the problem among those suffering from it. Qualitative studies often ask broad questions and attempt to operationally that broad question by narrowing down the question to more specific questions from which answers can be got. For instance, one can ask the question – \”Why do children with ADD find it difficult to learn?\” While the answer may be obvious (- they have ADD, thus are unable to pay attention), this question can lead us to ask far more specific questions like – \”Is it because they find structured work complex to tackle?\”, \”Do the current curriculum discount ADD as a barrier in learning?\” – Questions can be far more specific of course but what is important is that they can be asked experts, teachers and investigated via interviews and observations of children with ADD in a learning environment. Details that are of relevance to the topic must then be recorded – the more details, the better it is. Then the resulting data will be studied for patterns that can provide answers to the specific problems and from here ascertain a possible answer to the bigger question. Dr. DoRight has recently been hired as the President of the “Universal Human Care Hospital”, where he oversees all departments with over 5,000 employees and over 20,000 patients at the medical facility. He has been provided with a broad set of duties and oversight of numerous departments, including business development, customer services, human resources, legal, patient advocacy, to name a few. He has managers in each department that he supervises and who work with him to address the needs of the various internal and external stakeholders of the hospital. Case: Wal-Mart’s Global Expansion

Wal-Mart, today the largest retailer in the world, was a purely U.S. domestic company until 1991. When the company decided to expand into Mexico, critics warned that the company was too American, meaning that its business model would not work in other countries where markets, infrastructure, consumer tastes and preferences vary, and where established retailers already dominated. Wal-Mart went ahead with its expansion plans, opening a joint venture operation in Mexico with local retailer Cifera.

Wal-Mart’s Global Expansion

Established in Arkansas in 1962 by Sam Walton, over the last four decades Wal-Mart has grown rapidly to become the largest retailer in the world with sales of $330 billion, 1.8 million associates (Wal-Mart’s term for employees), and almost 7,000 stores. Until 1991, Wal-Mart’s operations were confined to the United States. There it established a competitive advantage based upon a combination of efficient merchandising, buying power, and human relations policies. Among other things, Wal-Mart was a leader in the implementation of information systems to track product sales and inventory, developed one of the most efficient distribution systems in the world, and was one of the first companies to promote widespread stock ownership among employees. These practices led to high productivity that enabled Wal-Mart to drive down its operating costs, which it passed on to consumers in the form of everyday low prices, a strategy that enabled the company to gain market share first in general merchandising, where it now dominates, and later in food retailing, where it is taking market share from established supermarkets.

By 1990, however, Wal-Mart realized that its opportunities for growth in the United States were becoming more limited. Management calculated that by the early 2000s, domestic growth opportunities would be constrained due to market saturation. So the company decided to expand globally. Initially, the critics scoffed. Wal-Mart, they said, was too American a company. While its retailing practices were well suited to America, they would not work in other countries where infrastructure was different, consumer tastes and preferences vary, and where established retailers already dominated.

Unperturbed, in 1991 Wal-Mart started to expand internationally with the opening of its first stores in Mexico. The Mexican operation was established as a joint venture with Cifera, the largest local retailer. Initially, Wal-Mart made a number of missteps that seemed to prove the critics right. Wal-Mart had problems replicating its efficient distribution system in Mexico. Poor infrastructure, crowded roads, and a lack of leverage with local suppliers, many of which could not or would not deliver directly to Wal-Mart’s stores or distribution centers, resulted in stocking problems and raised costs and prices. Initially, prices at Wal-Mart in Mexico were some 20 percent above prices for comparable products in the company’s U.S. stores, which limited Wal-Mart’s ability to gain market share. There were also problems with merchandise selection. Many of the stores in Mexico carried items that were popular in the United States. These included ice skates, riding lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and fishing tackle. Not surprisingly, these items did not sell well in Mexico, some managers would slash prices to move inventory, only to find that the company’s automated information systems would immediately order more inventory to replenish the depleted stock.

By the mid-1990’s, however, Wal-Mart had learned from its early mistakes and adapted its Mexican operations to match the local environment. A partnership with a Mexican trucking company dramatically improved the distribution system, while more careful stocking practices meant that the Mexican stores sold merchandise that appealed more to local tastes and preferences. As Wal-Mart’s presence grew, many of Wal-Mart’s suppliers built factories near its Mexican distribution centers so that they could better serve the company, which helped to further drive down inventory and logistics costs. Today, Mexico is a leading light in Wal-Mart’s international operations. In 1998, Wal-Mart was more than twice the size of its nearest rival in Mexico with some 700 stores and revenues of $12.5 billion.

The Mexican experience proved to Wal-Mart that it could compete outside of the United States. It has subsequently expanded into thirteen other countries. Wal-Mart entered Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and South Korea, by acquiring existing retailers and then transferring its information systems, logistics, and management expertise. In other nations Wal-Mart established its own stores. As a result of these moves, by mid-2006 the company had over 2,700 stores outside the United States, employed some 500,000 associates and generated international revenues of more than $62 billion.

In addition to greater growth, expanding internationally has brought Wal-Mart two other major benefits. First, Wal-Mart has also been able to reap significant economies of scale from its global buying power. Many of Wal-Mart’s key suppliers have long been international companies; for example, GE (appliances), Unilever (food products), and Procter & Gamble (personal care products) are all major Wal-Mart suppliers that have long had their own global operations. By building international reach, Wal-Mart has used its enhanced size to demand deeper discounts from the local operations of its global suppliers, increasing the company’s ability to lower prices to consumers, gain market share, and ultimately earn greater profits. Second, Wal-Mart has found that it is benefiting from the flow of ideas across the 14 countries in which it now competes. For example, a two-level store in New York State came about because of the success of multilevel stores in South Korea. Other ideas, such as wine departments in its stores in Argentina, have now been integrated into layouts worldwide.

Wal-Mart realized that if it didn’t expand internationally, other global retailers would beat it to the punch. Wal-Mart faces significant global competition from Carrefour of France, Ahold of Holland, and Tesco from the United Kingdom. Carrefour, the world’s second largest retailer, is perhaps the most global of the lot. The pioneer of the hypermarket concept now operates in 26 countries and generates more than 50 percent of its sales outside France. Compared to this, Wal-Mart is a laggard with less than 20 percent of its sales in 2006 generated from international operations. However, there is room for significant global expansion. The global retailing market is still very fragmented. The top 25 retailers controlled less than 20 percent of worldwide retail sales in 2006, although forecasts suggest the figure could reach 40 percent by 2010, with Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe being the main battlegrounds.

Response Paper-McCloskey Article

Having completed the unit of philosophy of religion, you are now ready to respond to an article written by an actual atheist. This article, titled “On Being an Atheist,” was written by H. J. McCloskey in 1968 for the journal Question. McCloskey is an Australian philosopher who wrote a number of atheistic works in the 1960s and 70s including the book God and Evil (Nijhoff, 1974). In this article, McCloskey is both critical of the classical arguments for God’s existence and offers the problem of evil as a reason why one should not believe in God.
Your assignment is to read his short article, attached above, and respond to each of the questions below. The basis for your answers should primarily come from the resources provided in the lessons covering the philosophy of religion unit of the course (Evans, Craig, and the PointeCast presentation). You are not merely to quote these sources as an answer to the question – answer in your own words. You are also encouraged to appeal to other outside sources as well, as long as you properly document them. This Response Paper is to be a minimum of 1500 words (equivalent to six pages) and should be written as a single essay and not just a list of answers to questions. You may be critical of McCloskey, but should remain respectful. Your instructor is looking for a detailed response to each of the questions below.
Specifically, you should address the following:
1. McCloskey refers to the arguments as “proofs” and often implies that they can’t definitively establish the case for God, so therefore they should be abandoned. What would you say about this in light of my comments on the approaches to the arguments in the PointeCast presentation (Lesson 18)?

2. On the Cosmological Argument:
o McCloskey claims that the “mere existence of the world constitutes no reason for believing in such a being [i.e. a necessarily existing being].” Using Evans’ discussion of the non-temporal form of the argument (pp. 69-77) explain why the cause of the universe must be necessary (and therefore uncaused).
o McCloskey also claims that the cosmological argument “does not entitle us to postulate an all-powerful, all-perfect, uncaused cause.“ In light of Evans’s final paragraph on the cosmological argument (p. 77), how might you respond to McCloskey?

3. On the Teleological Argument:
o McCloskey claims that “to get the proof going, genuine indisputable examples of design and purpose are needed.” Discuss this standard of “indisputability” which he calls a “very conclusive objection.” Is it reasonable?
o From your reading in Evans, can you offer an example of design that, while not necessarily “indisputable”, you believe provides strong evidence of a designer of the universe?
o McCloskey implies that evolution has displaced the need for a designer. Assuming evolution is true, for argument’s sake, how would you respond to McCloskey (see Evans pp. 82-83)?
o McCloskey claims that the presence of imperfection and evil in the world argues against “the perfection of the divine design or divine purpose in the world.” Remembering Evans’ comments about the limitations of the cosmological argument, how might you respond to this charge by McCloskey?

4. On the Problem of Evil:
o McCloskey’s main objection to theism is the presence of evil in the world and he raises it several times: “No being who was perfect could have created a world in which there was unavoidable suffering or in which his creatures would (and in fact could have been created so as not to) engage in morally evil acts, acts which very often result in injury to innocent persons.” The language of this claim seems to imply that it is an example of the logical form of the problem. Given this implication, using Evans’s discussion of the logical problem (pp. 159-168, noting especially his concluding paragraphs to this section), how might you respond to McCloskey?
o McCloskey specifically discusses the free will argument, asking “might not God have very easily so have arranged the world and biased man to virtue that men always freely chose what is right?” From what you have already learned about free will earlier in the course, and what Evans says about the free will theodicy, especially the section on Mackie and Plantinga’s response (pp. 163-166) and what he says about the evidential problem (pp. 168-172), how would you respond to McCloskey’s question?

5. On Atheism as Comforting
o In the final pages of McCloskey’s article he claims that atheism is more comforting than theism. Using the argument presented by William Lane Craig in the article “The Absurdity of Life without God,” respond to McCloskey’s claim.
